I feel that this grant helped us achieve our goals in several different ways. First, I feel that it really helped grow our program in terms of community interest. For the first time 4 years, we had more audience members per show than we have had. For example, on closing night, we had almost 400 audience members at that show alone. We were also able to grow our technical crew. By adding leadership positions where students were responsible for programming and running the projections, it offered our students opportunities they would not have had otherwise. It also took our program to an advanced level. Crestwood theatre became the first high school theatre program in the area to use Broadway projections for a production. Finally it allowed us to take on this production in the first place. Without the grant we would not have been able to do the show at all, as the costs would have been too high.
This grant served 60 students directly plus all of the students that attended the production of Anastasia. This served the entire student membership of the Crestwood Theatre program. These student span all grades at Crestwood High School, including a few students from the middle school as well. In order to reach students outside the membership, we promoted the show through digital media, paper promotions, and social media. We also created videos to play in classrooms and had each teacher put a flyer up in their classrooms. The students were very excited about the opportunity to learn about and work with the projections. In addition, we also served the students that attended the production. We had over 1200 people attend the show, many of them students from Crestwood. This helped us to promote the program and hopefully grow membership in following years to come. I had several students from the middle school discuss joining the program after they saw the show.
I would have started the process of choosing the show sooner so as to not be so rushed in trying to procure funds for the project. This made things a little bit stressful for us since we needed the materials by a certain date in order to be ready for opening night. We also ran into a problem where we needed to add a projection or slideshow into the mix and we had to find a workaround for that since their stage player did not offer that option. We ended up buying a piece of technology that can be used in the future that allows us to switch video inputs between multiple sources. I imagine that we will use this again in the future. I would also have liked to spend more time timing the projection changes to music in the show. Overall I think we did a good job of this, but improvements can always be made.
An example of a student that was greatly affected by this grant was Lachelle Moreland Jones. Lachelle Moreland Jones is a senior and a tech crew member of our club. Up until now, Lachelle had taken on smaller roles within the technical crew. For this show, Lachelle ran the projections and sound for the show. This is the first student to ever get this opportunity and Lachelle took it upon herself to learn the stage player, system, cues, and inner workings of the design. Lachelle was able to take so much ownership of this portion of the show. She began making creative choices of her own and would ask to rerun a scene during rehearsal to best time a projection effect with the music and the actors. You could see how excited she was about it and was able to really control the pace and transitions of the show. It was great to see.
I just wanted to thank you again so much for this opportunity. Since I began running the theatre program 20 years ago, all I have wanted was to offer opportunities to our students that they would not normally have and you allowed us to do this for this production.
